Dear, for some reason I never read this entry! Ahh... fun times. I laughed with the plastic covers while biking ;) "Ich spreche ein bissen Deutsch" is "a little German" (you wouldn't use wenig in that case), but yes, that would mean they would STILL talk to you in German... pretty much like they do when you tell them KEIN... weird peoples.
